79 wpm: beat that

April 26, 2008 · 7 Comments

How fast can you type — against competition?

Typeracer.

The fun comes not just from the chance to engage in addictive, pointless competition online, but because you test your skills by typing quotes from books and movies. See if you can recognize the source of each quote as you type, and as you watch your little VW Beetle avatar nudge across the screen toward the finish line. Watch out: typos are the equivalent of spinning off the track and running into a ditch.

UPDATE: Losing by 15 44 words per minute to a competitor named NotSober has dented my pride.

Wow, I hit 104wpm and STILL wasn’t close to winning. Stan won at 149. As for recognizing what I typed, I couldn’t begin to even summarize it. I guess I don’t walk and chew gum at the same time.

    78. That’s my average. OMG, I spent 10 minutes there! Thanks, I think!

Can’t beat it–my best was 68, average 59. I like to think that my talents lie in areas other than fine motor skills. At least, that’s what I tell myself…

Jeff — 104 is (*Darth Vader voice*) Impressive. Did you use some of those extra-fast NASA robot typing fingers?

Patti, I’m sure you could speed-write an illuminated manuscript with the best of them.

No, but I bet Stan is a robot. I’ll never match 150. On the bright side, you’ve provided me with (yet another) perfect way to avoid doing my taxes!

Great. Thanks for that. Another way to waste minutes that we’ll never get back! Dang, gotta break 82!

My best was 94, but my average was 75. This one quote had a made up word in it–gorgeousity? I kept frantically mistyping it and going back and then mistyping it and finally got something like a 54 wpm as a result.

    Thanks for the link!
