I love it when the doorbell rings and it’s not religious proselytizers hawking salvation, or a neighbor holding a box of puppies sired by my dog, or the National Guard warning me that the toxic cloud is ninety seconds away. It’s the FedEx driver, bearing books.
My books. After close to two years of brainstorming, outlining, writing, erasing, rewriting, editing, talking with editors, rewriting again, proofreading, and copyediting, here’s The Dirty Secrets Club, so fresh off the printing press that I can still smell the ink. Call it proof, validation, vanity, reward, or joy — whatever it is, I’m going to go wallow in it.
(And yes, Mom: One of these copies is for you.)

Wallow away Meg, it’s well deserved! I must say, it’s brilliant to hear that a great writer like yourself still gets that thrill when a new book is finally ready.
And I’m sure other commenters on the site would agree that we appreciat the way that you’ve shared some of the experience of the brainstorming, copy-editing and all that jazz along the way.
Can’t wait to read it, and hope it sells by the boxload!

What a lovely baby, Meg! Such a healthy complexion and sharp corners….
Everyone has a price and I discovered that mine was my name on the front cover (guaranteed never to bring in a royalty, though).

Lovely package, Meg. Eye-catching, with a an attention-grabbing title.
And I can’t resist adding that while having one’s name on the cover is a highly desirable goal (one that continues to elude me), having one’s name inside someone else’s book is pretty good too.
Thanks for that bit of infamy, Meg. I’ll be touting this book to everyone I know and a lot of people I don’t know.

Steve, thanks for your enthusiasm. Far be it from me to suggest you hijack a truck delivering copies of the novel to bookstores… however, you might try to cajole a friendly bookseller into seeing whether they have any early deliveries.

Hi Meg
Are you going to be hawking any early copies at Harrogate?
Meg // May 9, 2008 at 11:54 am
I’m working on it, DJ.
